The Year 2012

Here’s what the year 2012 looked like through my eyes! 2012 was the year my dreams came true, the year I fell in love with a city called Paris, the year I ate way too many sweets, the year I got my whole heart broken and the year I learned so many new things about myself. It’s been the best and the worst of times. Let’s have a little flashback in the form of photos.

January
The only thing I could do in January was to dream about my move to the city of light. Everything else felt a little bit unimportant to be perfectly honest. I could only fantasise about the last trip I’ve made to Paris, when the city swept me off my feet in only a couple of days. I was so excited, nervous, anxious and scared before my move. I think I felt every possible feeling during this time. Would I love it? Hate it? Would I feel that this was the biggest regret in my life so far? Little did I know that this was about to become one of the best things I’ve ever done.

February
In February I got on a plane and then I finally arrived in Paris. I spent the month exploring both my own neighbourhood and the whole city. I started school and I spoke French for the first time in my life. I lived alone (and loved it) for the first time as well and enjoyed so many evenings in my window, looking out over the Seine. With that view I never felt alone, I had the whole city right outside my door. This was a month of many new “firsts” for me and even though it was a little bit scary at times, it was all worth it in the end.

March
During March I started to feel a little bit more comfortable, both by myself and in my new city. I had learned which métro lines were the ones that could take me home, which buses were the best (and the slowest) and where I could do the best grocery shopping. In the end of February and in the beginning of March, Fashion Week also arrived in Paris. It was my first international Fashion Week but it certainly wouldn’t be my last. We also got a little heat wave during a couple of weeks this month. I spent those by the Seine, sunbathing in my window and calling home to tell my mom how wonderful it all was.

April
The end of March and the beginning of April were the time when Paris was covered in beautiful flowers and cherry blossoms! I couldn’t get enough of them and chased down almost every single tree that I could find just to see a few signs of true spring. Even though I managed to live in Paris during the rainiest spring of them all in 84 years (yes, 84 years I was told!), the photos that I took are somehow almost exclusively from sunny, warm and beautiful days. In April it was also warm enough to sit outside in the parks and get a little bit of colour on your nose (or burn off the first layer of your skin, as I managed to do).

May
The month of May was like Swedish summer for me (or even better). I spent several evenings and nights along the Seine in good company and lots of food. I strolled around the city in light summer dresses and complained about not finding water when I needed it. I also finished my French classes and was relieved to get a little break from the intense French studies (even though I miss it to death now). I got to meet more amazing people that made my time in Paris even better and spend hot days sunbathing in Parc Monceau and Jardin du Luxembourg. The end to my fantastic adventure also came closer and closer…

June
In June I had to leave this amazing city behind. I dreaded the day that I was booked on a flight back home even though I missed family, friends and loved ones. It felt like just as I was getting to know the city a little bit better I was forced to leave it. A few tears ran down my cheeks when I had to close the door to my beautiful little apartment where I had made myself a home during the last months, and a couple more ran down my cheeks when my journey ended on the exact same street where it all had begun a few months earlier.

July & August
The summer months were spent in Stockholm (where I’m originally from) and unfortunately the weather wasn’t much to rave about… I spent the days getting back to my normal routines, a few cosy picnics here and there, some greatly missed restaurant visits and new friendships that I cherish even more today. Although it was probably the most boring summer ever, much due to the horrible weather most of the time and people being away on vacation and perhaps because I spent the days longing for Paris as well.

September
In September I made the decision to move back to Paris the next year so the September month was spent planning, looking for apartments and figuring out what I wanted to do once I arrived. Yes, I know, for some people this was a little bit too early to think about but I had already made a little list of things I wanted to see and do the same day that I had to move back to Stockholm. I also started a new job and kept myself busy so that I wouldn’t long too much.

October
Since I missed Paris way too much and due to a birthday present I got to spend a weekend in Paris during the end of September and the beginning of October. I enjoyed a few indian summer days with warm weather and lots of sunshine, fantastic meals at new and old restaurants, walks through my favourite neighbourhoods, shooting at Fashion Week and I got to see my old apartment again, which I never thought I would. I saw the view from the top of the Arc de Triomphe for the first time ever and discovered my new favourite Thoumieux.

November
In November I turned a year older and actually felt a little bit wiser as well. I think this could have something to do with my experience abroad, don’t you think?

Christmas by Carin Olsson (Paris in Four Months)

December
And well, so far December has been full of Christmas preparations and celebrations, eating way too much food and sweets and watching so many great movies together with family and friends. Now I really need to start packing my bags because before you know it 2013 and my next adventure will begin. I just hope this one will be as good as the first time! I would really appreciate it if 2013 would cut me some slack.

I hope you all have had a wonderful year. And I really hope that you would like to come with me on this next adventure of mine as well! Having your support and kind words can really brighten up any day and it truly feel like you’re not doing this totally by yourself. Merci!

WHAT AN AWESOME POST!!! I am going to take the train up to Les Arcs from Paris later and will save this on my laptop for a more thorough train re-read. I’ll leave a more meaningful comment afterwards. But I can already tell it’s inspirational. That’s what’s best about Paris, isn’t it? It brings out inspiration in us. We’re so lucky to live here!! :)

Lots of love & joy at the end of this great year
