Ask Away

It seems like many of you have a lot of questions on your mind lately. Right now I’m receiving tons of questions about everything in between “Where are you right now?“, “When are you going back to Paris?“, “Which are your favourite beauty products?” and “Where are you from?” to “How do you edit your photos?“, “What should I not miss while in Paris?“, “Where did you study French?” and “Where do you buy your favourite macarons?“. And I hear you! So why not have a little question and answer session over here?

You’ll ask the questions (comment on this post until the end of the week) and I’ll do my best to answer them all. What do you say? What’s on your mind? Now’s your chance to ask me anything. Ready, set, go!

  • Sarah

Hello Carin, what’s your most favorite subject to photograph? Streets? Sweets? People? Balconies?

  • Romila Marie

The always asked question: Laduree or Pierre Herme? Haha 😀 But seriously, if you can live anywhere in Paris where do you want to live in particular? :)

  • Tina

Hello Carin, me and my bf are going to Paris next Wed. and we are planning a night out with dinner. Could you recommend us any nice restaurants? Thank you in advance! Lovely greetings from Austria.

  • Clare Havens

So…how DO you edit your photos?!

    • Stella

Wow, I was going to ask the same thing, with almost the same format. XD

  • Emily K.g

Do you ever think of moving out of Paris? What cities/countries do you dream of visiting soon/want to visit? X

  • toytulip

Hi Carin! I have the biggest crush on your blog and photography! I am just starting out with my Canon 60D, trying to figure out all the ins and outs and I will take this opportunity to ask you a couple of questions! :)
    1. Which camera lenses are your favorite / do you recommend for beginners?
    2. Do you think photography courses are worth investing in or prefer learning by yourself?

    2. When having to take pictures in different establishments, shops, restaurants, etc, do you ask permission first or how do you handle the situation? I tend to feel really awkward and end up taking crappy, rushed photos, cos I have no idea how to behave…

Thank you! Looking forward to your answers! :)

  • Natasha

Hi Carin. Thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to ask you a few questions. Like many people here, I also really admire your photography and would love to take similar ones to document my own personal life. Do you have any composition and lighting tips? What resources would you recommend to people wanting to improve their photography (books, workshops, etc.)? Thank you!

  • ritournelle

I’d love to know when you’ll be back in Paris and what equipment you use for photography / editing.

  • Roos

    Hi Carin!

I sincerely love your blog. I was wondering : what is your job currently? And what brought you to Paris?

  • callen

    I was wondering..
What gives you courage to move to Paris?and why Paris?

  • Vicki Archer

    I’m just going to listen… :) xv

  • Darina

I am wondering: what is the hardest thing about keeping a blog? I love your blog, photographs and stories, everyday I am checking it and looking forward to the new post everyday.

  • Darina

I am wondering: what is the hardest thing you think about keeping a blog?
I just love your blog, the stories and beautiful photographs and the variation of subjects! Everyday I am looking forward to read your new post (and looking forward to your Weekend Reading tips!)

  • Rebecca

    Hi Carin,
    1. I am going to Paris for September Fashion week and I was wondering how easy it was to get inside or at least get some street style snaps. Do you need a press pass?

    2. I am also wondering what the best place to stay in Paris is if I would do an airbnb, I was looking at the 7th arrondissement, any suggestions?

  • Amber

Hi! First I’d like to say that I absolutely love your photos like probably everyone does! I’m going to Paris for the first time next tuesday and I’ve been looking at some restaurants, but I was wondering if you have any recommendations. I was really interested in Les Cocottes, but I saw things like pigeon and pig’s feet on the menu and… that’s not really for me haha.

I’d also like to know what your favorite shops are! The rue cambon Chanel store is definitely on my list, but are there any good Parisian shops that aren’t so common like Zara and H&M etc?

I believe you’re in Stockholm now right? Enjoy the rest of your vacation and thanks in advance for your answer! X

  • Grace Beekman

Where do you work? Was it difficult finding a job once you moved to Paris?

    (ok I guess that’s 2 questions…)

  • Cristina Landi

Carin, I loved this post! I’ve been following you for a couple of months and I have two questions:
1.what camera lenses do you use for taking the photos for the blog?
    2. do you usually carry more than one kind of lenses?
    Thank you! : )

  • Annabelle

    Hello Carin!
I just have to say that I am a big fan of this lovely blog!
I want to ask three things:
    1. Please recommend a must-go market in Paris!
    2. Do you keep a diary?
    3. What’s your philosophy?

    Thank you:)

  • Shih-Wei

    Hi Carin:)
How did you establish this blog? By wordpress, blogger, or anything else?
(I love this blog so much!)

  • Kitty Cattie

Your pictures have lots of beauty, and I feel like I am in a dream when I look at them. I have 3 questions for you regarding traveling:

    1. What is the name of the camera do you use for all the beautiful shoots?

    2. I know that you inform us which city that you are in, but can you also have a specific location so I can go too when I come to that city?

    3. How come you never take pictures of your hotel and home?

    Thanks ♥

  • LaLesya

Are you interested in arts? Maybe you like some illustrators or artists, so if you do, recommend some of them please)

  • Yanuarys

Hi Carin, I’m a big fan of your blog and photography.
I also admire your determination on following your dreams.
I have been trying to find a school in Paris to study French, do you have any recommendations?

  • natitoberlin

Dear Carine, sorry for a more or less personal question, but do you find it difficult to get to know new men in Paris? It’s kind of the city of love, but I guess everything is way more prosaic, isn’t it?)

  • lahdeedah

Love your photography and your perspective! BIG thank you for sharing beautiful Paris. Can you share your top 10 favorite/must-read blogs? Merci beaucoup!

  • Caroline

I am dying to (possibly) spend next summer abroad in Paris, preferably as an au pair. Can you give me any advice/suggestions?! Thanks!

  • Wendy

    Hi Carin,

I have been playing with the idea of studying abroad and I wanted to know whether you went to a specific school or language centre to learn French?

  • Gabrielle

Hi Carin! I studied abroad at La Sorbonne during university, and have now since graduated. I loved Paris so much that I am leaving my “real job” and will be an au pair in Paris beginning in September. I lived in the 14th last time, and will now be living in the 1st. Any tips for living in this new part of the city? Merci!

  • Jen Jacobs

I love doing dessert photography just like you! Sometimes I find it hard to get good lighting in the little bakeries and find a flash harsh…any tips on how to perfect your lighting? What program do you edit your photos in? Looking forward to your response. Absolutely love your blog! xo

  • Joana Ščerbinkinaitė

Hello! I am so in love with your photos! :) And I wanted to ask what is the name of the camera that you have? Looking forward to your answers! :) Thanks in advance))

  • Will She Love Paris

Hi Carin, your hair is always so perfect :p How do you maintain it? (ps: this is a serious question ./. )

Do you find it hard staying slim while travelling abroad? I would want to try everything! Do you exercise at all or are you blessed with a high metabolism? Oh Paris… the macarons would kill me!

  • health_district

    1. Which app do you use to capture your pics? (you know when you used to teach us French words :) )
    2. Which is the best part to live in Stockholm?
Following you all the time here and on IG as well.

  • Camilla

I’m curious to know why you didn’t bring along your dog when you moved to Paris? I found your blog a little while ago because I am thinking of doing the exact same as you did – drop everything and move to Paris. But leaving my dog behind would be just heartbreaking. So, what were your thoughts? :-)

  • Madeline S

Hi Carin! I would love to move to Paris one day, even though it’s a little scary to think about! Just wondering, what was the most nerve wracking part about moving there? Or was it an easy transition for you? Thanks so much! Love your blog! :)

  • Kay

Hi Carine. Any advice on meeting people in Paris for someone planning to move one day soon?

  • Katherine

Hi Carin! Before the blog, I remember your amazing reveals on TPF and have notices that since moving to Paris you no longer purchase deaigner bags. I was wondering if you ever struggle with the fact that you can’t get a new bag and how do you cope with it? I ask because I always want something new, bit obviously can’t afford it right away!

  • Pamela Theriot

Ill be in Paris for Thanksgiving this year–ill be renting an apartment–can u tell me what two areas/arrondissements you would recommend ? Thank you!

    • Lil_a11

The 15th and 16th are the safest! Have fun!

  • Michele

I was going to start asking about your camera and photos, they’re just so gorgeous, but I see others have the same idea. So I’ll ask this instead: how do you make money doing this? I’m really trying to start something similar ( but obviously it’s easier to attract a following when you’re actually living and posting from Paris! Any advice to get me started? Is it all about branding or interaction or both or more? Thanks :)

  • Matilda

Which apartment companies/websites did you use to find all of your past Paris homes? And I’m interested in your skin products too, hope you’ve picked up some French pharmacy treats! x

  • Paula

It might seem odd, but how old are you??? I’m 19 and I’m thinking of moving abroad but I don’t know if I’m too young for this.

  • @Fauxfoodiegirl

I am dying to know who makes your orange handbag, it is absolutely gorgeous and it’s perfect for all seasons.

    • nnenna1881

      Hermes…One question answered

  • Jess

Which app do you use to edit your instagram photos??
Do you shoot in Raw or Jpeg??

  • Rashinabhula

How did you get established in Paris? Or more specifically, what were some of the first/ most important things you did when you moved to Paris to build your brand/ get immersed in the lifestyle as a blogger and photographer? Thanks – love your work!

  • Vanja

How did you decide to change Scandinavia for Paris? What is the thing you miss most from Scandinavia. I am also curious how do you like the Serbian mentality, due to the hangout with the girls.

  • Camilla KapteinMoe

Hi! I just have to say that i really like your blog :) Since I’m a Norwegian myself, I guess I’m wondering where you’re from in Sweden, and what you miss the most when you’re not at home, like food, things to do, etc? :)

  • J

  • Marina

Wow, you are getting tons of questions!
Actually I was gonna email you and ask in person but since I have a chance to do it here, do you by any chance know where I can rent an apartment in Paris? Like is there a decent site for that or how do you local people do it?
And of course I’d love to learn more about the way you edit your pics and the program you edit them with. The colouring is beautiful. It’s bright but natural.

  • Diva In Me

    1. Did you learn photography yourself or you signed up for classes?
    2. To live in Paris, is it better and much easier to get around by knowing how to speak French?
    3. I understand that living in the heart of Paris itself is expensive but what’s the best next city closest to Paris itself that you’d recommend to stay?

  • Keri Walters

Love your blog! Do you have any tips on traveling to Paris for a vacation solo?

  • Stephanie Marie

what’s the worst part about living in paris? (the constant tourists, etc)
do you ever see yourself moving?
how hard was it to learn the language and become “fluent”?

  • Sundaygirl

Hi! I’ll be studying abroad in Paris next fall & just visited the amazing city this past May! I’m completely enamoured with the city! Anyway, I wanted to know if you could compile a guide for NYC since I will be travelling to NYC this December. Another question, what places do you recommend in Italy? I’ve been to Rome, Venice, Capri, and Naples. Thank you!

  • Esther Bielawski

Wow, you are going to be one busy lady! Firstly, I wanted to say that I really love your blog – your photography is gorgeous and very inspirational, keep up the wonderful work! My question (and I’m sorry if this has been asked, I did start going through previous comments so that I wouldn’t repeat one, but I kind of got lost in the volume of questions!) is about your posts which feature a ‘collage’ of your Instagram photos – how do you do that? Thank you!

  • kimmy

Hi Carin! What do you do for a living? How are u able to live in Paris since its such an expensive city. Do you have rich parents? Do you make anything from your blog? Love it btw.

  • byMelchiors

    Dear Carin
I also have a dog and it would breake my heart to go anywhere without her. Why did you decide that you wouldn’t bring your dog along with you to Paris?

  • Erin

Okay, I have to know! Did you name Nixon after the former president? His name has a really pejorative connotation here in the states, but luckily for your pup he’s cute enough to overcome it, haha.

Still on for those macarons next year? I hope so! xo

  • meri

Apart from your family and friends, what do you most miss about Sweden?

  • Esra

How would you describe the French/Parisiens? Are they easy to interact with?

  • Olivia

    Hello (:
I’m starting up a blog and would appreciate any advice.
I admire your blog’s class and maturity, so any words of wisdom would be treasured.

  • Nickie

    Hi Carin,

Thank you for creating such a beautiful blog. I fell in love with Paris and the French language over ten years ago in high school. I was finally able to visit in 2011 and fell in love all over again. I was so excited to find your blog, because I believe you capture all the simple, yet beautiful things, that makes Paris so special. I wanted to ask two questions:

    1. Which shop(s) would you recommend to purchase beauty products while in Paris?
( I heard Paris has some of the best pharmacies/shops for beauty products).

    2. Which restaurant(s) and part of town would you recommend in Paris for a romantic night out?

Thank you for your time..Please continue the great job with the blog! Your work is beautiful:)

    Kindest regards,

  • Betsy

I am curious…you say on your Camera Equipment page that the 50mm f/1.4 is the camera lens you use for most of your photos. Do you use that lens for the scenic landscape shots as well? I’m vacationing in Paris in a month and would like to just take one camera lens for my DSLR, but want to be able to capture the buildings/landmarks/scenic view shots just as well as the close ups of details throughout the city. Do you have one lens that you would recommend the most?

  • Marie

I am thinking of following my heart and moving to Paris!
What are the three biggest pieces of advice you would give to a young women to
make the transition a successful one? Merci et j’adore votre blog!

  • Rachel

I would love to know how you make these excellent pictures of window displays? I always get way too much reflection in the photo!

  • Quiqui

Carin, this question may sound silly, but I am curious and I am going to ask. How do you carry your camera? Do you use a big purse to carry everything, I mean your personal stuff and photography gear? or Do you carry all your photography equipment in a special bag? If yes, what kind of bag? Thanks. Xoxo

  • Marte GS

Hi! I love your blog, your inspiring photos and really well-written texts :)
But I have a few questions for you:
    – What to you actually do in Paris, do you have a job, go to school etc.?
    – How did you find an apartment, and what district do you live in?
    – Is it easy to find friends in Paris, are they outgoing?

  • Catherine

Did you move to Paris forever? Is it permitted by Schengen rules? You may just come and stay as much as you want without a visa?

  • Liz

What kind of education do you have?
What do you work with in Paris?

  • Zoe

are you fluent in french now?

  • Yana Kim

I have seen a picture of a building in Paris. it was i think a hexagon shape but had an opening. in other words not like a closed ring building. and inside the building there was a statue of a horse. so if you lie down and take a picture you will see a hexagon shape of the building rood with a horse statue in the middle of it. i hope you can help me locate this building.

    thank you!
